This brown alga is part of the wrack found on European rocky coasts. It is a large algae from the Fucale order and is characterised by it’s ovoid vesicles. Ascophyllum nodosum can be collected all through the year. Up to 1 meter long, it is harvested by hand. Its stalk is cut at 20 cm from the base in order to allow the regrowth. Because it is processed and transformed within 24 hours after collection, the seaweed keeps it’s freshness. Ascophyllum nodosum is widely used in various fields such as thalassotherapy. This seaweed used to be a good cure in China and New Zealand’s Folk Medicine for obesity treatment and rheumatisms. |
