This purple brown alga is abundant on Atlantic coasts and can live as an epiphyte on the stems of Laminaria hyperborea.

The consumption of Palmaria palmata, also called Dulse by Anglo Saxons, was started in Iceland as far back as in the Xth Century.

Up to 50 centimetres long, Palmaria palmata is collected by hand on the medium tide level. Its collection is allowed all the year round, but it is mainly harvested in spring and autumn.
