Sea Fennel is not an alga but a perennial plant belonging to Umbelliferae family.

Its originality lies in the fact that it grows in rocks exposed to winds and spindrifts giving it a pleasant, distinctive scent. Collected from May to July it is a protected species with a particular rule. Its stem must be cut without uprooting.

Formerly sailors used to take crystallized Sea Fennel on their distant trips to protect themselves from scurvy.
